my failures with self-care

self-care, much like sustainability, is a hot-ticket trend that has infiltrated everything from magazines to cosmetic counters. but the nature of self-care runs deeper than something that can be purchased or commodified. it's a call to action to, as the word itself describes, take care of yourself. self-care could - and should - look different to everyone, which makes it difficult to market. as aware as i am of what self-care should be, there have been many, many times where i've failed at taking care of myself, at addressing the issues that need to be addressed in lieu of slapping a face mask on and ignoring the deeper problem.

self-care, to me, could look like:

reading a book
going for a walk around the reservoir i go to with my dad
listening to a podcast
deep cleaning my room
going to the florist
doing a long, thorough skincare routine
watching a musical
going to my favorite coffee shop and getting an oat-milk dirty chai
going grocery shopping

but there have been times where i've glossed over the bigger internal issues happening, times where i've failed at taking care of myself, like when i:

extend myself too far and wind up feeling drained, even when i could spot the warning signs
isolate myself in lieu of having an uncomfortable conversation
engage in surface-level self-care (ie. doing a face mask, painting my nails, etc.) instead of addressing any mental health issues
over-eating a comfort food

i think part of growth and taking care of ourselves is admitting when we don't do it well. and it's not getting caught in routine of care, either. so please leave some tips and tricks for what you do to take care of yourself below, and let me know if you try any of mine.
